Entrance Examination Information for International Students
 
The School and Graduate School of Economics provide special programs for international students, under which the special entrance examinations are conducted respectively. For information related to undergraduate program entrance examination, please refer to "Kyushu University special screening for international students". The graduate school of Economics consists of three departments, the department of Economic Engineering, the department of Economic Systems and the department of Business and Technology Management. Since the department of Business and Technology Management provides its own special programs for international students, please refer to Kyusyu University Business School's website for detailed information. (*Please note that the department of Business and Technology Management does not have Research Student Program.) The Department of Economic Engineering and the Department of Economic Systems of the Graduate School of Economics offer the following three types of programs:

Master Program
Ph.D Program
Research Student Program

*In addition to the above programs, Kyushu University (or the Graduate School of Economics) has initiated international exchange programs with foreign universities. Those universities under the Agreement for International Exchange Programs are listed here. If you are a student of one of those universities and wish to study in the School or Graduate School of Economics, please contact the appropriate person at your university.
 
Master Program
 
In addition to the general master's program entrance examination mainly for Japanese students (37 max.), the special master's program entrance examinations for international students (a few) are conducted by the Graduate School of Economics (departments of Economic Engineering and Economic Systems). For detailed information, please refer to this page (in Japanese only).
 
(a) The Examination for International Students with Japanese Government Scholarship
This examination is applicable and designed only for International Students who have already been granted a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, and are studying in one of the Japanese universities as research students. The admission is in April. An Oral examination (in Japanese) based on the Research Plan and a careful evaluation of all other application documents will be conducted. The two letters of recommendation (one from a faculty member of the foreign university the applicant graduated from and the other from a faculty member of the Japanese university that accepted the applicant as a research student) are particularly closely scrutinized, but the academic transcript will also be evaluated. There is no written examination for this type of candidates.
 
(b) The Examination for International Students by "Special Recommendation"
This examination is applicable and designed only for the International Students who are either students or graduates of one of the designated schools and applying by through the "Special Recommendation" issued by one of those schools. This admission is in April. The designated schools for entry in 2014 are as follows: Pusan National University, Renmin University of China (School of Economics, School of Finance, School of Agricultural Economy and Management, School of Business, School of Information Technology, School of Statistics, School of Environment and Natural Resources, and School of Labor and Human Resources), Nanjing University (School of Business),  Northeastern University (School of Business Administration)(in China), Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University (Frankfurt), Reims Management School, The University of Manchester, and Chulalongkorn University.

The Graduate School of Economics will make a careful evaluation of all application documents. The Research Plan will be particularly closely scrutinized, although the two letters of recommendation written by different faculty members of the designated school and the academic transcript will also be evaluated. Because there is no written examination or oral examination for this type of candidates, applicants do not need to come to Kyushu University for examinations.

(c) The Special Examination for International Students—the Joint Education Program with School of Economics, Renmin University of China
This examination is applicable and designed for international students who are applying for the Joint Education Program with the School of Economics, Renmin University of China (please refer to this Japanese page for details). The admission is in October. Only the master’s students enrolled in the School of Economics, Renmin University of China, are qualified to apply for this program. After the primary screening by Renmin University of China, the second screening is conducted in April at the Beijing Office of Kyushu University. (d) The Special Examination for International Students – International Program in Economics (Department of Economic Engineering)("G30" Program)
This examination is applicable and designed for international students applying for the International Master's Program in Economics (IMPE, click here for details). This program has been initiated in 2009 by the department of Economic Engineering as part of carrying out the "Global 30 Project" launched by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The admission is in October. The curriculum is provided in English. The entrance examination is conducted by document screening and interview. For overseas applicants, the teleconference system will be used to conduct the interviews. For detailed information, please refer to our What's new page for further details.
 
(e) General Examination
For International Students who are not categorized above may take the General Examination as Japanese students do. The admission is in April. This examination consists of a written examination in Economics and foreign languages (English and a second foreign language including English) . For the latter, a required score on the TOEFL test can act as a substitute for those language tests. The TOEFL test must have been taken within the last 2 years.
 
 
Ph.D. Program
 
The Graduate School of Economics (departments of Economic Engineering and Economic Systems) holds special Ph.D program entrance examinations for international students (a few) in addition to the general Ph.D program entrance examination mainly for Japanese students (24 max.). For detailed information, please refer to this page (in Japanese only).
 
(a) The Examination for International Students with Japanese Government Scholarship
This examination is applicable and designed only for International Students with Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship, who are studying in Kyushu University or one of other Japanese universities as master’s students or research students (6 months or more) and whose scholarships are expected to be extended after getting enrolled in doctoral programs. The admission is in April. This examination is designed to measure the applicants' academic ability and language proficiency and consists of the screening of a master thesis, examination in foreign language and interview. For the latter, a required score on the TOEFL test can act as a substitute for the language tests. The TOEFL test must have been taken within the last 2 years.
 
(b) The Examination for International Students by "Special Recommendation"
This examination is applicable and designed only for International Students who were enrolled in graduate school of Economics through the examination for international students through "Special Recommendation" and are expected to complete the program with predefined number of credits. The admission is in April. This examination is designed to measure the applicants' academic ability and language proficiency and consists of the screening of a master thesis, examination in foreign language and interview. For the latter, a score of TOEFL test can act as a substitute for these language examinations. The TOEFL must have been written within the last 2 years.
 
(c) The Special Examination for International Students – Individual Recommendation
This examination is applicable and designed for international students who are regarded as the students with high knowledge and ability by any individual professors in the Graduate School of Economics. The admissions are in April and October. The entrance examination is conducted mainly by document screening. The required documents are as follows:

(1)Two letters of recommendation: one written by the future advisor in Kyushu University, and the other by the current advisor in the applicant's university. (2) Master's thesis . (3) Future research proposal.

Because written and oral examinations are not conducted for this program, applicants do not need to come to Japan for the examinations.
 
(d) The Special Examination for International Students – International Program in Economics (Department of Economic Engineering) ("G30" Program)
This examination is applicable and designed for international students applying for the International Doctoral Program in Economics (IDPE, click here for details) which was initiated in 2009 by the department of Economic Engineering as a part of carrying out the "Global 30 project" launched by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The admission is in October. The curriculum is provided in English. The entrance examination is conducted by document screening and interview. For overseas applicants, the TV meeting system will be used to conduct the interview. Please refer to our What's new page for further details.
 
(e) The Special Examination for International Students – Chinese Government Program "China State Sponsored Graduate Scholarship Program for Building High-level Universities"
This examination is applicable and designed for international students who have been granted the scholarships from the Chinese Scholarship Council as doctoral degree candidates under the above program. The admission is in October.
 
(f) General Examination
International students who do not belong to the categories mentioned above may take the same General Examination with Japanese applicants. This examination is designed to measure the applicants' academic ability and proficiency in language and consists of three parts: consideration of submitted academic papers (such as a Master's thesis or equivalent), written examination in English and the second foreign language including English, and oral assessment. For the latter, a TOEFL score can act as a substitute for these language examinations. The TOEFL must have been taken within the last 2 years.
 
 
Research Student Program
 
Research Student Programs are conducted by the department of Economic Engineering and the department of Economic Systems, which are usually composed of the following two categories:

(a) Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Scholarship Students who are selected in their home country to receive scholarships from the Japanese government. For details on this scholarship, please inquire at the appropriate government office, or at the Japanese Embassy in your country.

(b) Students who have already completed 16 years of formal education in a foreign country and wish to apply for the Master and/or Ph.D. programs at Graduate School of Economics.
For the Research Student Program (b), admission decisions are made on the basis of full consideration of the applicant's academic experience and the degree of relevance of the field of research to the Graduate School of Economics. One of the requirements for this program is an acceptance by a Professor or an Associate Professor in our faculty. If you would like to apply for this program, please send a written request for this program to the Student Office of the Faculty of Economics. The program starts twice a year: on April 1 and October 1. The application deadlines are November 30 of the previous year, and May 31 respectively. One of the requirements for this program is an acceptance by a Professor or an Associate Professor in our faculty. If you get an acceptance from a professor or an Associate Professor, please download and fill out the forms, then send all the required documents to the Student Office of the School and Graduate School of Economics.

*Please note that the department of Business and Technology and Management does not provide Research Student Program.
